The Historical and Legendary Jofre Hacienda

San Luis de la Paz, Gto. Wednesday, February 29, 2012.  North of San Luis de la Paz, is located the old and splendid San Jose de Jofre Hacienda, one of the first farms formed in the region.  During the Colonial Era, it served as a rest stop in the Silver Road that passed through there, and in which minerals and foodstuffs were transported between Mexico City and Zacatecas.

Also, in accordance with oral tradition, in this place Franciscan missionaries tried to cure the Majurrru, a Chichimeca leader, in 1551, when he was fatally wounded by Otomi Indians in a big battle.  According to this legend, since the priests failed in their attempt, the Chichimeca rewarded them with the same coin than their chief: death.  The ruins of the thermal baths mentioned in the story still exist.

The ranch was an important agricultural and cattle center during the Jesuit administration (1594-1767).  Their insignia is observed in its architecture until now.  In recent years, it has been remodeled and has been turned into a singular tourist attraction.  It has an impressive aqueduct and a beautiful chapel, both recognized by the Cultural Heritage Conservation Awards of the State of Guanajuato.
