Leon Guanajuato Receives Pope Benedict XVI
Leon, Gto. Friday, March 23, 2012. Today, we traveled to Leon, the Shoes World Capital, to receive along with thousands of people His Holiness Benedict XVI, on his first visit to Mexico. At Boulevard Adolfo Lopez Mateos, and under a burning sun, we witnessed this historic event. When the Pope finally passed by the place where we were, we got infinitely excited as all those who were there. Welcome Benedict XVI to our beloved Guanajuato!
Earlier, when we went through the Bajio International Airport in Silao, there were lots of individuals on the highway waiting for the heir of Saint Peter. Once we got to Leon, we observed crowds heading to the streets where the route would pass.
Once in Boulevard Lopez Mateos, we looked for a spot with not so many people and where we had a good view, to take photos and videos. There, we realized the expectation to receive the Pope, despite the hot weather. The faithful screamed, performed the wave, and flapped their flags happily.
After hours of waiting, the big moment came. Suddenly, policemen riding motorcycles appeared and the people began shouting “Here comes the Pope!” Benedict XVI from his Pope mobile passed blessing the multitude. We only saw him a few seconds, but it was well worth it. We will never forget the vivid emotion we felt.
